Pain and Inflammation relief
Ever had a paper cut? So tiny, yet so red and painful! That redness and pain is a result of acute inflammation. A simple little cut in our skin causes our body’s immune system to activate a variety of cells that destroy bacteria, form blood clots, and renew the skin so that our wound heals with a tiny little scar.
Acute inflammation has a special short-term purpose of healing our bodies from injury, infection, and allergies. Once the situation is under control, the inflammatory response shuts down. Chronic inflammation occurs when our body doesn’t recognize when the “fire is out”, and there are still “smoldering embers” somewhere inside.
Let me put it another way. We’re sitting on the 50 yard line, watching our home team football game, and we have the ball. The opponent is our cross town rival and we begin to run the ball. The defence pushes back, effectively, but doesn’t stop when the play is done! Then, our opponent’s bench clears as they all join in, aggressively continuing to tackle us. Unbelievably, these guys start going into the stands, taking out the spectators! People of all ages are getting hurt, the trainers and medics can’t take care of the injured quickly enough, and our team can’t shut them down!
A silly example, I know, but you get the idea! As our body’s immune system continues fighting the infection, injury or allergy, even after things have calmed down, damage is done to tissues and organs that were otherwise perfectly healthy. Chronic inflammation consists of acute inflammation that just keeps going, having far-reaching effects. If left uncontrolled over time, it can lead to degenerative conditions and diseases.
Here are some lifestyle changes that we can implement right now to vastly reduce the inflammation already existing in our bodies and prevent it in the future.
DIET: Diets high in sugar and saturated fats promote inflammation. A great way to change it up is by increasing our intake of monosaturated fats like cold pressed extra virgin olive oil, adding Omega 3 (we use Flax Seed oil at our house), and eating whole grains, rainbow-coloured fruits and vegetables, and dark chocolate (80% if you can). Look for probiotics in Kefir, live active cultured yogurts, or even a probiotic tablet are good.
MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT – Prevents chronic inflammatory diseases. Don’t forget to EXERCISE!! Even as little as a Power Walk for half an hour a day will make a huge difference in your overall health and bone strength!
STOP SMOKING! “nuff said!”
GET PLENTY OF REST: Solid, uninterrupted, restful sleep restores, replenishes and rejuvenates our body’s cells and tissues. If you can, a good 7 - 10 hours a night is the goal.
REDUCE STRESS: Yes, you can!! Try some yoga, meditation, deep breathing, listening to calming sounds, visualization and relaxation techniques, and saying “no” more often to over commitment.
SUPPLEMENTS: When you eat on the fly, you can’t always be assured of getting all the nutrients your body needs! When it comes to antioxidant supplements, I can only recommend one product line, because IT WORKS and has the widest variety of high antioxidant fruits and vegetables available! TriVita
So, please, while you can, take care of yourself from the inside out and even aging can be beautiful!!
