One technical aspect of all US sim phone cards bought from HolidayPhone that needs to be explained is that a prepaid sim card or standard sim card contains its unique serial number (ICCID), internationally unique number of the mobile user (IMSI), security authentication and ciphering information, temporary information related to the local network, a list of the services the user has access to and two passwords of which the PIN is for usual use and the PUK is for unlocking. According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia on the internet, the technical definition of an ISCCID is, quote “Each SIM is internationally identified by its Integrated circuit card identifier (ICCID). ICCIDs are stored in the SIM cards and are also engraved or printed on the SIM card body during a process called personalization.
The Wikipedia definition of an ICCID continues, quote “The ICCID is defined by the ITU-T recommendation E.118 as the Primary Account Number. Its layout is based on ISO/IEC 7812. According to E.118, the number is up to 19 digits long, including a single check digit calculated using the Luhn algorithm. However, the GSM Phase 1 defined the ICCID length as 10 octets with operator-specific structure” end quote. Wikipedia defines an IMSI as, quote “An International Mobile Subscriber Identity or IMSI is a unique identification associated with all GSM and UMTS network mobile phone users. It is stored as a 64 bit field in the SIM inside the phone and is sent by the phone to the network. It is also used for acquiring other details of the mobile in the Home Location Register (HLR) or as locally copied in the Visitor Location Register.
The Wikipedia definition of an IMSI continues, quote “To prevent eavesdroppers identifying and tracking the subscriber on the radio interface, the IMSI is sent as rarely as possible and a randomly-generated TMSI is sent instead” end quote. Wikipedia defines a PIN as, quote “A personal identification number (PIN, pronounced “pin”) is a secret numeric password shared between a user and a system that can be used to authenticate the user to the system” and quote. Wikipedia defines a PUK as, quote “A PIN Unlock Code (PUC), also known as a PIN Unlock Key (PUK), is used in GSM mobile phones and some smartcards to unblock a blocked card. All prepaid USA sim card owners now have a better understanding of what these terms and associated abbreviations mean and stand for.
