People with US sim phone cards from HolidayPhone will realise that their own prepaid USA sim card is internationally identified by its Integrated circuit card identifier (ICCID). ICCIDs are stored in the US prepaid sim cards and are also imprinted or stamped on the prepaid US sim card body during a procedure called personalization. The ICCID is defined by the ITU-T recommendation E.118 as the Primary Account Number. Its blueprint is based on ISO/IEC 7812. According to E.118, the number is up to nineteen digits long, together with a single check digit calculated using the Luhn algorithm. The Luhn Algorithm is an interesting calculation or formula which validates an assortment of ID numbers.
According to Wikipedia, quote gThe Luhn algorithm or Luhn formula, also known as the gmodulus 10 or gmod 10 algorithm, is a simple checksum formula used to validate a variety of identification numbers, such as credit card numbers, IMEI numbers, National Provider Identifier numbers in US and Canadian Social Insurance Numbers. It was created by IBM scientist Hans Peter Luhn and described in U.S. Patent No. 2,950,048, filed on January 6, 1954, and granted on August 23, 1960. The algorithm is in the public domain and is in wide use today. It is specified in ISO/IEC 7812-1.[1] It is not intended to be a cryptographically secure hash function; it was designed to protect against accidental errors, not malicious attacks. Most credit cards and many government identification numbers use the algorithm as a simple method of distinguishing valid numbers from collections of random digitsh end quote.
Owners of US sim phone cards from HolidayPhone will be amazed to know that the GSM Phase1 defined the ICCID length as ten octets with operator-specific structure. The number is made up of the following subparts. The Issuer identification number (IIN) has a ceiling of seven digits and has a foremost industry identifier (MII), 2 fixed digits, 89 for telecommunication purposes, a country code, 1-3 digits as defined by ITU-T recommendation E.164 and an Issuer identifier, 1-4 digits. Individual account identification has an individual account identification number. Its length is changeable but every number below one IIN will have the same length. The Check digit has a single digit calculated from the other digits by the Luhn algorithm.
